Movie Research | Saltburn
"What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on that this movie have?"
In lots of thriller movies, the audience is confused about what's happening and is trying to figure out why, except we might not even know what's going on in the mind of our protagonist. Saltburn is full of thrilling twists and unpredictable scenes that shocks the audience and portrays the characters in sick ways. Something I want to add to my project is the shock value that Saltburn has. You may not know what's going on in a lot of thriller movies until information's released at the end, that's what I want to add to my final task.
"What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?"
I loved how the way Saltburn is filmed doesn't make it appear as a thriller when you prepare to watch it, it completely throws off your expectations. With the funny characters, bright lighting, and hyped music, you don't expect it to be as disturbing as it truly is. I feel this contrast helps to make the shock have just that much more value.
"What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?"
In Saltburn, there wasn't much emphasis on the acting of character's emotions. While this may be a stylistic or writing choice, I personally feels like it makes the plot of a thriller hard to follow. Saltburn was very hard to follow without any expressions or information on the characters emotions. This seems to be a pattern for many thriller movies in order to create confusion for the audience, but I personally don't like it. At least not for a movie like this.
